Immediately, my blood began to boil. I wondered, how much money did that useless piece of metal cost? I also bristled at the obvious "renaming" of the "act" in question. No one wants to call it by its more famous slang name, "Brought to you by the Stimulus Package" since that is now synonymous with waste, fraud, unaccounted-for billions, pork, B.S. (and is one of the most incompetent bills ever to pass the House without anyone actually reading it.) Then, over the next few weeks I started seeing more of these signs popping up near every construction project (and in IL...and that's A LOT. We have two seasons here. Winter and construction.) I can recall at least 5 off the top of my head that I've seen on the streets I regularly drive. And I don't drive very far; grocery store, office, park, mall, and local library. This is not a big radius. I found this today. The Illinois Department of Transportation puts the cost of each one at about $300 to make, with the total price rising to about $1,000 including labor, wooden mounting posts and other installation costs. The article goes on to say that no one can estimate how many of these signs are going up across the state or what the total cost to the taxpayer is. Convenient. These signs are going up all over the nation and it's amazing to me that more taxpayers aren't outraged. First of all, who needs a sign telling us that "Americans are working" when we can just see them working on the side of the road and secondly, these signs are nothing more than campaign signs for 2012. "Look what we did! We put people back to work!" And you also wasted my money on campaign signs that could have filled in potholes.
If you people out there don't wake up soon and demand your representatives stop wasting your money then you deserve to be BROKE. I don't want to hear anyone complaining about the economy if you don't have the clout to get these signs SCRAPPED. NO MORE. Are we going to get serious about holding our government accountable for how they spend the so-called "stimulus" money or are we going to veg out in front of Big Brother and pretend like this country isn't deteriorating into a looters' fantasy?
Your local reps need to hear from you`about how you feel about these stupid and wasteful signs. And please, send me photos of the signs from your neighborhood. Since the state won't track them, maybe we can!
