I attended the Homer/Lockport/Joliet Tea Party Gubernatorial debate this evening and I have some thoughts to share. I know you've all been waiting breathlessly for my opinion on the candidates. Now that I've heard them, I can give it to you.
Five candidates showed up for this event. Bill Brady, Adam Andrzejewski, Dan Proft, Kirk Dillard, and Bob Schillerstrom.
Let's begin with who I hated. That would be Schillerstrom. I'm not really sure why he showed up. He claimed to know what the tea parties are about and who we are but then proceeded to tell us he's pro-choice and anti-conceal/carry. He almost got booed off the stage. Let me get this straight Bob; you favor the extermination of innocent human babies by their mothers but are against the extermination of criminals by armed citizens? Sounds like a crisis of conscience to me. Proving he is also not smarter than your average fourth-grader when asked from where our rights originate, he answered, "The People." This, of course, would be a surprise to Thomas Jefferson who wrote that we are "endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights..."
But I'll concede this to Schillerstrom; he had the integrity to give unpopular answers honestly. The other candidates all said what we wanted to hear and there's no guarantee they actually believe it. He still lost my vote.
Moving on to Dillard. I wouldn't say I hated his performance, but I hate guys like him. Career politicians. Been in the IL Senate for half my lifetime and with that much time, he hasn't created any significant change in IL politics or in the advancement of the conservative party or ideas. So why should I believe he's going to be a great conservative governor? Then it came up that he was in an Obama commercial endorsing the big zero! No thanks. His excuse didn't hold up. I don't care if Obama signed onto some ethics legislation you liked...the guy refused to vote to save infants from being left in a broom closet to DIE at IL hospitals. If that's not an ethics problem, I don't know what ethics means. Furthermore, for someone as pro-life as Dillard says he is, how could he endorse a person with so little respect for life that he would vote against a law to save a gasping, dying child? How do you shake hands with a monster like that let alone endorse him in a televised ad? Sorry Dillard. You also lose my vote.
The last three are a toss up for me. Brady is one of those career politicians that I don't like, but at the same time, he was more conservative than Dillard or Schillerstrom. But there's something very waxy about Brady. He's very polished and very smooth. He looks shiny. He does all the right things and says all the right things. He has very white teeth. Watching him speak is like watching every other candidate you've ever seen. Knows how to deliver a line, has a million memorized responses to every question under the sun. You're never going to catch this guy unprepared. But he's like a machine. There's something robotic about him. Something not so genuine. I didn't dislike him, I just kept thinking Stepford Wives and had a strange urge to check his back for the metal wind up key.
As unflattering as that description might sound, I could vote for Bill Brady. He might not be my first choice but he seems like a good man, a conservative man, and if he's the nominee then I will vote for him. But Bill, it wouldn't hurt you to tell a joke or say "um" once in a while.
Moving onto Adam A. Here's a tip. When your last name is Andrudiaewierueirfkjski, you might want to consider changing it for a public office run. How about Adam Andrews? But his name is not his biggest problem. Looking at Adam I got a protective feeling toward him. I was watching him fidget before the event and noticed him pulling at his socks...which were exposed nearly to the middle of his legs because his pants were too short. Adam has the exact opposite problem that Bill Brady has. He's clearly a regular guy. So regular you want to play Pictionary with him. I get a little brother vibe off Adam. I want to tousle his hair and punch him in the shoulder and take him shopping for longer pants and a better haircut. He's darling. I just wanted to give him a nooggie.
The IL Democrats will eat him alive, spit out his bones and do the Pasodoble on them. He had some great answers. He's a passionate guy. I loved him. But can he win? Not a chance. There was a moment when he and Proft got into a spat and let's just say that it didn't go well for Adam. And if you can't hold your own in a primary debate with friends, there is NO WAY you will stand up to what the enemy is going to throw at you. So Adam, I'm truly sorry to say I think you should drop out of the race and consider running against Mark Kirk instead for the Senate seat. That's a great place for you to start and get some experience in this game. And Kirk is a hideous RINO beast that must be defeated. I would 100% support you in that race. But call me first to help you pick out a new suit.
That brings me to Dan Proft. Proft definitely won the crowd. He was funny, quick on his feet, genuine, unrehearsed (or so good at it, it seemed unrehearsed) and brought me to my feet several times. I especially liked his comparison between IL politicians and the school bully demanding your lunch money at every turn. Exactly. If I could choose a candidate to run against Quinn, it would be Proft, but again...can he win? He's a little sarcastic. How will that play in the media? He'll make great soundbites. But they'll try to tear him apart. However, he's so quick with a comeback, they may not be able to and I like that. He's tough enough. That's what you have to be to make it in this town. I also thought he was believable. He echoed a lot of my own thoughts...Illinois isn't broken...it's FIXED! It's a racket! Then I went to his website and there's a section on there called "If the wig fits, wear it." LMAO...they're putting Blago's hair on people. Go look...it's hilarious. The best thing he said all night though was that we should pay state legislators in state bonds. Yes!
So congratulations Dan Proft. You not only won the debate but you may have won my vote. I say may because we have the others to consider. Jim Ryan is running, as is Andy McKenna. Neither showed up and so neither will be getting my vote, HOWEVER, if we don't narrow down this field we're going to end up with a Schillerstrom or a Ryan getting the nom because our votes are split between too many candidates. We have got to get together on this one and decide who we're going to support as a united group. If we allow our votes to go to all of them willy-nilly, it will just open the door for a "moderate" and we'll be in the same old situation.
So if any of you have any thoughts on this, I would love to hear them in the comments section below. To view the debate in its entirety click HERE

It does not take a majority to prevail... but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men. ~Samuel Adams

There is one question at the very end that kind of shocked me. They asked all of the candidates who attended what happened when they approached Andy McKenna, the leader of the Repubican [spelling is intentional] party) and asked for his endorsement. As Leader of the Repubican Party, McKenna asked them what their plan was and asked how they were going to raise money. Well, McKenna never disclosed that he was going to run for Governor and now he is. Smells like a rat to me. Not only will I not vote for McKenna but I'm going to tell everyone I know about how a squirrels nuts make his look small.
I don't care what party you're in, if you're a rat, a cheat, or a con artist, you're days are over!
I have to say, you're analysis is right on. I could not have put it to words as well as you have. BRAVO! It was great seeing you there!
I'll be forwarding this to everyone I know in Illinois.

Hi Megan,
Hope all's well.
As you know, I don't live in Illinois but there's a similar dynamic here in California - the Dems run the state and are running it into the ground.
But because of the way districts are set up, there's no way of getting rid of them realistically, or the engine that funds and drives them, namely the public employee unions.
Ah-nold, to his credit, actually tried to take this toxic system on during his first term but the unions got together and spent millions to defeat his ballot initiatives.
A question I think you should ask your gubernatorial candidates is the same question I'm asking mine - given this reality, just how are you planning to enact all the nifty policy changes you say you want and support? What changes are you planning to make so that you can actually govern?
Until those questions get answered, all the chest thumping rhetoric, applause and good intentions mean zip.
I have an additional question for Meg Whitman, running for the GOP nomination here in CA,which is how she plans to deal with the 900 pound gorilla in the room called illegal aliens that is bankrupting California's public sector and social services.
But I'm not sure if that's quite so much of an issue in Illinois.
Regards,
Rob
Hi Megan!
I will say....I had to LMAO at your comments regarding all the candidates at this event. I knew nothing about any of them. I have lived in this putrid state for the last 6 years and I have to say....the stink of corruption and the slime trail that follows it has lasted, apparently, for longer than I've been alive, and I feel like I have to take a shower every two seconds! Anyway....I have to agree that Proft seems to be the frontrunner and I do also agree that the others need to stand WITH him and not AGAINST him should he be the candidate for this election. I hope no one pulls a Scuzzifascist! LOL! I did speak to Proft following the debate and I think he can hold his own against any Dummycrap. Should they try to pin him with something, he hits back...but using their own hand or fist against them! LOL! The others I don't feel will do the job. They will fold like cards and do the bidding of the fools that follow him.
Andy, a word of advice....if you are against gay marriage, I would refrain in the future from using "Date him, marry me" in your monologue of debates!
Mr. Dillard....Obama supporter in any form! Need I say more!
Mr. Brady....like you, but there is too much politician in you.
Mr. S....I started out liking you, but for your honesty, I don't believe in your lack of protective rights for the citizens of this state and have more regard for the "fraud in chief's" beliefs of killing babies rather than killing those who want to kill us!
Mr. Proft...I'm leaning towards you, so you better do us proud should be nominated!!

Rob,
I lived in California for about 4 years in the early - mid 90's. What I am seeing in the Chicago area here is somewhat similar to what I had seen in California back then. We also have a very large segment of illeagal immigrants here in the Chicago area albiet without the farm country. I could easily see the problem you face in California starting to rear its ugly head here in the Chicago area.
Before anyone starts to jump on me for what they may call xeonphobic or anti-immigrant views let me state, I love the idea of immigrants. Somewhere back along the way my fathers side immigrated to the US from Scotland in the late 1800's. My moms side immigrated here from Canada in the late 1800's. My best friend's parents were born in Mexico and immigrated here in the 1960's. He and I have had this discussion many times and he is more rabid about it than I am. Feel free to come to this country but do it legally. This is a problem that must be addressed or else we will end up being taxed to death trying to pay for it.
I met you at the Homer Glen Tea party and thought you did an EXCELLENT job. This also is an Excellent analysis. I agree 100% and am planning to send a few bucks to the Proft campaign. I hope everyone considers doing the same. Unfortunately, it takes money to win an election.
I'm sending a link (to intolerant fox) out to all my friends so they can read your words of wisdom!
My thoughts were on Andy or Dan before I went to the forum. Seeing them in person just solidified it for me. I shook hands with both and thought them to be genuinely nice/honest guys especially Andy Andyjejjwieuiwjski. But Dan.....I could see him in a tangle with Quinn or Hynes.
Great article - you're spot on with your analysis! Proft is brilliant (and Adam Andrewunsdjkdgjdl is very much the little brother!)
Greetings Megan:
Enjoyed your review of the Homer-Glen candidate event; funny how I concur with your findings. On Halloween, ROLT (Republicans of Lyons Township) hosted a meet the candidate’s forum. At this point, ROLT has not announced their endorsements.
Share your disdain for Shillerstrom. If Shillerstrom was honest, he ought to have credited the Stroger’s for all the “jobs created,” jobs which simply fled C(r)ook for DuPage County. We need to remind folks how DuPage Board Chairman Shillerstrom colluded behind the scenes with Mayor Daley at the expense of Bensenville and her newly elected Mayor. Shillerstrom assisted Daley’s O’Hare airport DuPage County land grab.
Cheers,
One Loyal American
This is the first time I've seen your blog; I agree with virtually everything you've said in this post, except that I put Adam and Proft in reverse order from you.
I also think you have a very entertaining writing style, and I look forward to reading more of it.
thanks for the great comments. I just want to add that it is very important that we hash all this out BEFORE the primaries so that we are a united front. For those of you supporting Adam..I hear you. I liked him too. But try imagining him going up against the Daley machine. No way!!! We have to not only choose the candidate with the right values and policies, but we MUST choose the candidate who can WIN. If he can't win...it's all for naught. I really want to encourage Adam to back out of this race and get into the Senate race. We need him there desperately. Who is going to take on Kirk?? And THERE'S a guy who cannot defend his voting record. Adam would have all kinds of ammunition and I would volunteer at his campaign for Senate. But Governor? Too baby-faced and green.
Love the analysis and I agree 100%. I had the chance to meet Proft last night at a fundraiser downstate and he has very specific plans - plans that I would like to see implemented. I also went to a debate viewing party the night before and he got several applauses after his statements. I agree he needs money to fight the 'machine' - but if we all get together and do that - nothing is impossible. I would also like you to take a look at Judge Don Lowery for US Senate. He is NOT a career politician - he could be kickin' back living the retired good life, but he's sick of what he's seeing happen to this country. He wants to go to Washington to fight. He's done it all of his life - he is a Bronze Star veteran and a judge for 26 years. He is conservative, pro-life, pro-gun. As a fellow tea-party speaker, I will NOT vote for Kirk, under any circumstance whatsoever. I live in a rural farm community and I will make sure ALL of the farmers are aware of his vote for cap n trade. We need a solid conservative that can fight against him!
I think Adam's the man for the upcoming election. He's definitely got the ideas, solutions, and background in improving legislative accountability.
Good post... I've heard both and felt pretty much the same way.
Excellent assessment and funny as heck. You're on my favorites list!
It's too late to anyone to change races now. I wish Adam and Proft were running together for Gov and Lt.Gov (wouldn't much care who was running for which), but it's too late for that now.
I agree we need to pick one, and I agree those two are the best choices. I disagree that Adam doesn't have what it take to go up against the machine. I think he has just what it takes.
In the Senate race, I haven't made up my mind, but I like Arrington and Zadek, although I'm ready to be impressed by Hughes, I haven't yet been.
